Template design - How to format fields

Introduction

When we add dynamic content in the Design Surface we create what is known as a field, fields are placeholders in the document template that are used at runtime to retrieve the information from the data source and insert it into the document when rendered.

Fields will show up in the Design Surface by default with a gray background and an XPath expression (the location of the information in your data source).

Field formatting can be broken down into two main areas of usage:

  1. Applying styles to the field
  2. Changing the structure of the data when displayed

How to apply styles to the field

Field can be formatted just as you would any static text in your document, using the Properties Pane

  • From the Ribbon navigate to the View tab;
  • Click the Proprieties button from the Show group;
  • The Proprieties panel will appear on the left side;
  • Select the Field from the Design;
  • Assign any of the properties to the field.

Structural Formatting for Fields

This section is a short guide to formatting the data that will be rendered.

An example of structural formatting is taking a numerical price value located in the data source, and adding the appropriate currency for this field. Another is taking a date from the XML Standard format and changing it to the format of your specification.

In this section we will explore exactly how you can format the structure of your data presented in the output.

There are three primary access points for the Formatting Dialog to make structural formatting changes to your field's output.
